What is FNP?
About FNP
The Family Navigation Project (FNP) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre serves youth and families in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). FNP is a non-profit, philanthropically funded program that provides support to youth 11 to 29 years old experiencing mental health and/or addiction (MHA) concerns and their families.
The BEAM Navigation Study seeks to grow the reach of FNP, to serve youth and families in Sudbury-Manitoulin as well as the GTA.
FNP does not provide diagnosis, treatment, counselling, or crisis services. Instead, our team of experts helps young people and/or their families navigate the system more easily, to find and gain access to resources, such as service providers and treatment centres.
Our Story
FNP emerged as the result of a group of concerned parents in the GTA who were determined to help youth struggling with MHA challenges find the support they need. After encountering various barriers in a complex MHA system, they wanted to make sure that other families who were facing similar challenges didn’t feel “lost” along a complicated journey, too.
They wanted a timely and personalized service that would explore resource options and match the youth and family with the right program and/or professional help. As a result, FNP was launched in 2013. Founded by Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre psychiatrist, Dr. Anthony Levitt, in partnership with families, FNP has since helped over 6,800 youth and their families from across Ontario navigate the MHA system.

FNP’s Core Components
In the early stages of implementation, it is important to identify the “core components” of the program to articulate its identity, highlighting what makes it unique. The core components of FNP are the fundamental, indispensable elements that define our service.
FNP’s core components were identified through a co-design process with various interest-holders, including FNP management, FNP front-line staff, FNP research and operations staff, the Family Advisory Council, and the Youth Advisory Council. These are the components of the FNP model that will be essential to the implementation of FNP in Sudbury-Manitoulin.
